LCD is an analog-based display technology employing three fixed panels of pixels (one panel each for the RED, GREEN, & BLUE components of an NTSC video image). LCD also delivers a somewhat sharper image than DLP at any given resolution.

LCD projectors usually produce significantly higher ANSI lumen outputs than do DLP projectors with the same wattage lamp. DLP projectors have a much higher pixel “fill factor” than LCD. DLP-based projectors generally produce a much smoother looking image compared to LCD-based projectors of similar resolution.

DLP-based projectors have a high contrast ratio and efficient use of light. Contrast ratio compares the ratio between the brightest white and the darkest black that a projector can produce. Generally, a better contrast ratio leads to better black levels and, therefore, a more realistic presentation of darker scenes in movies and TV programs. DLP projectors tend to be more compact because they have fewer components.

All of the current 3-pound portable projectors on the market are DLP projectors. Most LCD projectors are five pounds and up. The higher lumen models are significantly heavier and larger. High lumen projectors are not considered portable.

You need to match the brightness of the projector to your audience and room size. Large rooms and audiences require high bulb strength brightness. (Projector bulb strength brightness is measured in ANSI lumens or lumens).

All projector rentals range from about 1000 up to 6000+ lumens in brightness. The higher the lumen the brighter the projector.

Up to 1000 lumens -good for low ambient light, presentations.

2000 lumens -These are the most popular units being sold and rented today. Very practical and will work with some ambient light.

3000 lumens -Much Larger unit than the 1000 to 2000 lumen units. Good for audiences of less than a hundred with ambient light.

5000 lumens – For audiences of 100 or more under brighter lights

6000+ lumens – For large events like conventions, conferences and trade shows where thousands of people need to view a presentation at the same time.

Another consideration is portability of the projector. Lower lumen units are the most portable.

As a general rule, as you increase bulb strength brightness, you reduce portability. High lumen projectors are larger and weigh more than low lumen projectors.

One factor that’s not so obvious and that’s not stated directly by digital projector manufacturers is that, depending on where your projector is set up from the screen, the brightness level can vary by 200%!

This is an especially important factor to consider for those looking for portable digital projectors since the screen to projector distance will most likely vary from setup to setup.

The goal of this article is to inform you of the impact of your projector’s positioning and lens type on brightness. By understanding how these factors work together, you’ll be able to achieve optimal levels of brightness as given by the projector’s manufacturer.

First off, the brightness given off varies greatly by the lens mode. When in full wide angle mode, the amount of light that makes it out of the lens is maximized and the amount of light is decreased by telephoto mode. In other words, you’ll get more lumens if you place your projector closer rather than farther away from your screen.

With most projectors that have a limited zoom lens, brightness is not an issue, but with certain types of portable digital projectors such as 3LCD and LCoS types which have a zoom ratio of around 2:1, the projector’s position can greatly affect image quality.

While having a large zoom ratio gives you more freedom in where to place your projector the trade off is a dramatic drop in brightness as distance increases. Also, placing your projector closer to the screen to increase brightness will only work up to a point. Too close, anywhere past the zoom mid range and you’ll run into color and image distortion as well as limiting the viewing area for your audience.

This is one important trade off to consider and keep in mind when shopping for portable digital projectors. The amount of brightness you’ll get in real life will likely be less than as stated by the manufacturer and you should look for as high a brightness level as possible to compensate for this.

Basically, you post a question using your computer and LCD projector and students click in their response using individual remote controls. You can set up questions using the SMART software or Microsoft powerpoint, Questions can be multiple choice or numeric questions, but you can’t really have students enter an open-ended response. That means you’re left with doing practice questions to standardized tests.

You can, however, show the results using a LCD data projector connected to your computer. Students can log into the system or use the classroom clickers anonymously. Gradebook software is provided and you can create class reports.Having said that I’m not sure the Smart Student Response system is worth the money.

A media release from smart technologies website for 2007 lists the suggested (educational) retail price of the 32 unit pack at $1,999 USD (approx $62 per unit) and the 24 unit pack at $1599 (approx $66 per unit). They also sell the Smart Response system in packs of 5 clickers.

Are we just paying two thousand dollars for a digital way to get students to raise their hands? Maybe, maybe not.

You could use the anonymous mode so that students are more open to given their response. But,you could also have students write their responses on a slip of paper and hand that into the front.

You could use the notebook software to keep track of student responses and marks. But, you could also just give a paper-and-pencil quiz. Is this classroom technology for technology’s sake, or does it actually improve the pedagogy and instructional practice?

Ultimately it comes down to whether you want classroom technology to allow you to move at the speed of thought. If you already teach with a data projector and powerpoint on a regular basis, is it that far removed to have students vote with a remote control console instead of a slip of paper? Will this be the technology edge that helps to engage the struggling boys in your class? Sure, we could record our marks in a binder, but you can also use Excel or gradekeeping software to do that. Given that our students are growing up in a digital age, Smart Response clickers seem to be a natural evolution, except for the price.

The presentational slide show is not a new idea. Of course, you might be the gifted orator who can make a success of this; but even then, though you’ll still want to make it lively, wouldn’t life be easier if the presentation itself could get the audience involved right away? If it could draw them in rather than put them to sleep, support rather than resist you as you work your magic? Or, if such skills aren’t your strong point, it might improve matters significantly if your slide show can captivate viewers on your behalf.
